Jaaziyah is a writer and artist based in Nairobi. She’s the author of the fantasy romance novel, Skeletons.
What is your book about?
I like to describe it as a realistic love story; it follows two lovers through their journey of forbidden love while attempting to manage societal expectations surrounding their relationship.
What inspired you to write?
I started writing out of boredom when I was eleven years old – I was much smarter back then in comparison to now, as an adult – and I had this story in my mind about dinosaurs; I imagined humanizing them and exploring that concept of human behaviors through them (in my story) – this was during my final English exam.
But my English teacher was so impressed by my creativity that he, my high school English teachers and my mother encouraged me to continue writing.
Seven years later and Skeletons was born.
What does this book mean to you?
It reminds me of how far I’ve come with my craft and myself. A lot of the experiences and characters are based from my real life. So it’s more of a personal diary of sorts than a novel.
What was the writing process like?
Hectic! I started law school when I began to seriously write the book and let me tell you that was a terrible idea. I wish there was a way I could have taken time off to focus solely on the book. But my law degree came first.
Don’t leave your food out in the cold too long.
